My Year of Rest and Relaxation

I flew through this book. It wasn’t necessarily super deep, but the underlying feeling the unnamed main character carried throughout was so relatable, even as you couldn’t help but judge her for her privilege and attitude. She’s out of touch and unlikeable, yet still feels undeniably human. What we see is only her cynical, numbed side, with the rest of her hidden away.

This story was definitely thought-provoking. For me, it reflected how, in today’s world, many of us use social media and technology to escape our own lives. Instead of drugging ourselves to sleep, we do it more passively, hiding from our thoughts with screens, selfishly wishing our lives away in a doom-scroll.
