The Memory Police
This book was extremely interesting and beautifully written. I loved the overall idea of the Memory Police and how the islanders reacted to things disappearing. It served as a perfect analogy for how societies respond to oppression.
I found myself resonating with R and his desire to make the main character remember. His disappointment came through so clearly, and he acted as a strong buffer between the MC and the old man’s fragmented realities.
Personally, I enjoyed the ending. The “not knowing” felt important and thought-provoking. The Memory Police having no reason for what they do, and the islanders having no idea why they’re okay with things disappearing, mirrors how our own societies often accept things slipping away. We may even stay silent until we, too, fully disappear.
