The Wedding People

I started this book as a breath of fresh air, but quickly realized the content wasn’t exactly happy though the story itself still felt light. Phoebe begins the book as a suicidal hermit, fresh off a traumatic divorce. She goes on a trip to end her life, but her plans are ruined by a wedding at the hotel. She ends up going through many changes that we can see clearly: I enjoyed being inside her head and watching her growth.

My main issue was with the way Gary, the groom, was written. He came across as the perfect man with zero flaws, while Lila, the bride, had all her flaws laid bare. I would have preferred if Phoebe’s arc ended with her maturing beyond her pedestal for Gary. She describes him in nearly the same way she once described her ex-husband, and it felt like she hadn’t truly learned how to be with herself which was what she needed most.
