The writing in this book was beautiful and lyrical. Edie was a complex, fascinating character. At times I found myself annoyed with her, but only because I wanted her to finally get what she deserved.
We follow Edie after she just lost her job and feels very lost. She meets a white man who is in an open relationship, hoping he can help her fill. a void. However racial and power dynamics make her situation a lot messier than she signed up for.
The storyline was unique and did a great job of humanizing each character. The dynamics between Eric (the husband), Rachel (the wife), and their adopted daughter Akila were especially well-done, each of them dealt with loneliness, desire, and a need for power in different ways. They all had their own flaws and weaknesses, but also strengths and beauty.
Overall, this book really highlighted the universal need for validation and connection, no matter how different we are.
